2. Specific main focuses of medical care

Heart and cardiovascular diseases 

• Diseases of the cardiovascular system, angina pectoris and cardiac infraction
• Diagnostics including intracardiac catheter examination and vascular sonography, vascular Doppler sonography, intracoronary pressure seam, endothelium functional testing of the cardiovascular system
• Intracardiac catheter attendance 24-hours on call for the medical care of acute heart attack patients
• Treatment by widening by means of balloon catheter and implanting of vascular supports (stents), rotational ablation
• Myocardial muscle diseases: myocardial muscle weakness: (heart insufficiency), diagnostic indication for heart transplantation, swelling of the myocardial muscle (HOCM) including alcohol ablation
• Congenital and acquired heart defects of the adult: heart valve diseases, vestibular septal defect, patent foramen ovale incl. umbrella closure
• Cardiac arrhythmias and pacemaker therapy: invasive electrophysiologic clarification, ablation therapy (Transection of abnormal electric pathways in the heart), diagnostic indication for pacemaker treatment as well as therapy with implantable defibrillators (ICD) in cases of life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, resynchronization therapy (CRT) in cases of myocardial muscle weakness
• Syncope clarification and treatment (temporary losses of consciousness) by means of tilt table exam

Diseases of the respiratory tracts and the lung (functional area pneumology)

• Clarification and treatment of severe infections, of bronchial asthma, lung fibrosis, COPD and emphysema, lung embolisms, pulmonic hypertension, mucoviscidosis, among others
• Sleep laboratory (diagnostics and treatment of the sleep apnea syndrome)

Internistic intensive treatment (functional area “internistic Intensive medicine”)

• Emergency treatment of life-threatening diseases with emphasis on heart and lung diseases

Endocrinology, diagnostics and treatment of endocrinologic diseases

• Endocrinologic functional diagnostics of diseases of the pituitary gland, the parathyroid, the adrenal gland, and the gonads

General internal medicine

• In addition to the aforesaid emphases, all general-internistic diseases are diagnosed and treated including medical care of multimorbid elder patients

3. Further services offered

The I. Medical Clinic is part of the Heart Center Augsburg-Schwaben in well-practiced cooperation with the Clinic for Heart and Thorax Surgery, the Clinic for Anesthesiology and Operative Intensive Medicine, and the II. Clinic for Children and Adolescent Persons (children’s cardiology). The I. Medical Clinic, functional area pneumology, is furthermore cooperation partner of the Allergologic Center in collaboration with the Clinic for Dermatology, the Clinic for Otolaryngology, the ILMU (department environmental hygiene), and the II. Clinic for Children and Adolescent Persons.

Special consulting hours respectively outpatients’ treatment exist for:

• Patients with myocardial muscle weakness
• Patients with implanted defibrillator (ICD)
• Special echocardiographic examinations (e.g. TEE)
• Pneumologic problem patients
• Endocrinologic outpatients’ treatment (not including thyroid diseases and diabetes)
