  2. Specific main focuses of medical care 

Heart surgical care of all diseases of the heart and of the aorta, under and without employment of the heart-lung machine:

• Placement of circulation bypasses at the heart
• Reconstruction or replacement of heart valves
• Application of heart supporting systems (permanent or as temporary solution)
• Other measures for the restoration of blood circulation of the heart (myocardial revascularization)
• Implantation and exchange of pacemakers (1, 2, or 3 chamber systems) as well as
• Insertion of internal apparatuses for the treatment of ventricular fibrillation (defibrillators)
• Surgical correction of congenital heart defects of children in cooperation with the children’s cardiology of II. Clinic for Children and Adolescent Persons
• Surgery of the expansion (aneurysm) or of the laceration (dissection) of the body’s main artery (aorta)

Surgical care of the thorax: 

• All types of surgery of the chest and lung in cases of benign (accumulations of liquids or air, etc.) and malignant diseases (lung cancer, other tumors, etc.) as well as injuries
• Application of endoscopic (diagnostic endoscopy) or minimally-invasive (keyhole surgery) methods

Supervision of the interdisciplinary VIP Medical
Unit including attendance to health checkups for executives 

Development of a “Cardiac Survival Network” since July 2007 for the provision of heart surgical care to non-transportable or critically transportable patients for selected regional cooperation partners with surgical treatment by a mobile operating team on site.

The Clinic for Heart and Thoracic Surgery is part of the Heart Centre Augsburg-Schwabia in well-practiced cooperation with the I. Medical Clinic, the Clinic for Anesthesiology and Operative Intensive Medicine, and the II. Clinic for Children and Juveniles (children’s cardiology).
